Center for Excellence in Lean Enterprise (CELE) Lean Certification Program
The Lean Certification Program teaches participants the tools and the Lean implementation model, including workshops where students are required to update their Value Stream by providing current and future state maps, action plans for implementation, documentation of improvements implemented, a key measure review, and problems encountered since the last session.

The program start date is January 12, 2010. The location is at The Center for Integrated Manufacturing Studies (CIMS) on the RIT Campus – here is a link to the map of the campus http://facilities.rit.edu/campus/maps/general/generallarge.gif. The CIMS building is building #78. All participants should park in parking lot T in any open spots that do not have “Reserved” or “Visitors” signs in them.

Lean Six Sigma Greenbelt Certification Program
The Lean Six Sigma Greenbelt certification program is presented one day a week for thirteen weeks. The program is instructor-led and will involve participants in extensive interactive training. Participants will gain in-depth exposure to
each topic through classroom assignments and structured exercises within team environments.

Lean Training

Lean programs equip professionals
with the essential tools needed to promote lean principles and increase overall productivity.
Lean Six Sigma Greenbelt/Blackbelt Lean Certification Program:

The Lean Six Sigma Greenbelt Lean Certification Program is presented over a three-month period, equaling a twelve day program. The program is
instructor-led and will involve participants in extensive interactive training. Participants will gain in-depth exposure to
each topic through classroom assignments and structured exercises within team environments. Successful completion of this
program will result in Lean Six Sigma Greenbelt certification. Participants can follow up Greenbelt certification with an additional 12-day program, including more enhanced project development and training, resulting in Blackbelt certification.
Workshops:
Lean Overview, Takt
Lean Overview In this session, participants will be exposed to
a broad list of Lean tools and definitions that will be covered in the
subsequent sessions. The first session compares some of traditional/batch
manufacturing vs Lean manufacturing.
On a quick overview basis, the following Lean tools will be briefly defined
and discussed: Value Stream Mapping (VSM); 5-S, Visual Controls, and Gemba;
Standard Work; Takt; Kanban, Pull Systems, and Supermarkets; Line and
Cell Design; Single Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED); Total Productive Maintenance
(TPM); Kaizen Event Training; Production Preparation Process (3-P); Impact
and Culture Change; and Assessment Tools.
Takt Participants will learn how to calculate Takt and how it is
utilized to synchronize the pace of production with the pace of sales.
Participants will experience why Takt is the foundation for calculating
resource requirements. Lastly, they will learn how to take Takt and introduce
it into the pacemaking process which, in turn, controls the pace of downstream
processes.
Value Stream Mapping, 5-S and Visual Controls
Value Stream Mapping Participants will experience a combination of classroom material
and classroom exercises. Participants will review the theory and value of VSM and why it serves
as a road map for an organization's Lean journey. Included in this module will be discussion
surrounding process mapping, information flow, material flow, and distribution methods.

Standard Work, Line Design, Kanban
Standard Work Participants will learn why standard work is a building block for
continuous improvement, how to create it, and how to visually present it to the associates
on the manufacturing floor.

Kaizen, Setup Reduction, Mistake Proofing
Kaizen Participants will learn how to structure a Kaizen event, including pre-event preparation,
tools and forms to be used, and how to document results. From this, they will understand the
necessity of a structured approach to Kaizen. As a result of this session, participants will
clearly understand the difference between 'kamikaze' Kaizens and Kaizen that is driven as
directed by the future state map.
Setup Reduction Participants will learn to break a setup down into four individual tasks:
internal, external, adjustment, and actual setup. They will be exposed to examples of techniques
used to reduce and/or eliminate unnecessary activities. Participants will understand why quick
changeovers are critical to key business metrics such as capacity, and thus represent a direct
impact to inventory levels.
Mistake Proofing In this session, a foundation of mistake-proofing concepts will be established.
Devices and techniques for achieving mistake-proofing effects to prevent or detect errors will be
explored. Lastly, participants will be shown how mistake-proofing fits into a structured
problem-solving process.
Total Productive Maintenance, Impact and Culture,
Other Tools
Total Productive Maintenance Participants will learn the differences
between preventive maintenance programs and total productive maintenance
(TPM) programs. They will learn how to calculate, monitor and improve
overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). They will learn how to run a TPM
Kaizen event and how to organizationally structure a sustainable TPM program.

Impact and Culture In this session participants will discuss the
reasons why changes fail. Eight steps to producing sustained change within
a manufacturing environment will be introduced. The instructor will lead
the discussion surrounding the organizational structures necessary to
support Lean efforts. Lastly, various methods for promoting, communicating
and rewarding change efforts will be investigated.

Other Tools In this session, three types of tools that are used
in the journey to Lean will be discussed. These are: assessment tools,
a waste-spotter's guide, and single-point lessons.

RemanU®

NC3R is committed to offering technical training to industry
members. In its education program, RemanU®, NC3R offers
workshops in a variety of technology areas valuable to the remanufacturing
industry. The cornerstone objective of each workshop is to offer hands-on
training that will provide immediate benefits to remanufacturers and their
businesses.

Surface Cleaning/Surface Finishing Technologies

This
workshop provides information on environmentally responsible, alternative
cleaning and finishing processes. Surface cleaning is a critical and costly
operation in most remanufacturing operations. However, many traditionally-used
chemicals have been banned or are considered hazardous and require costly
waste management. NC3R has experience helping small and medium-sized
businesses identify and implement alternate cleaning technologies and
has developed a number of techniques to improve surface quality in remanufacturing.
This course offers remanufacturers ideas to solve specific cleaning problems.
Quality Systems in Remanufacturing Operations

This course will focus on the quality assurance problem-solving tools
needed in a remanufacturing environment. These tools can help a remanufacturing
business achieve process stability and improve the ability of a process
to meet specifications through the reduction of variation. A good quality
assurance program will reduce scrap and rework, assist in defect prevention,
reduce quality costs, increase productivity, and increase margins. Participants
will gain insight into improving their operations with an effective quality
program.
ISO 9000 for Remanufacturers

This course will provide a basic understanding of ISO 9000 requirements
and the necessary commitments needed to achieve compliance or registration.
Besides outlining both the costs and benefits of ISO certification, the
course will also cover the issues involved in implementing ISO standards
in your business, including documentation and record-keeping, management
responsibility and procedures for registration.
Facility Planning

This training session will detail the many facets of facility planning
and offer insight into the evaluation methodologies required to improve
remanufacturing environments. Facility planning determines how to use
a company's fixed assets to meet the company's objectives, and it requires
a continuous process of evaluation and change to meet the needs of a dynamic
remanufacturing environment. The session will cover topics including strategic
planning, data collection, material flow analysis, inventory management,
and production planning.
Production Planning

This session will focus on production planning and control methodologies,
models, and accepted practices to enhance the ability of small to medium-size
manufacturers to schedule more efficiently. Participants will learn techniques
to develop part families for planning purposes and the use of standard
times as a method for capacity planning.
